Fundraising Ideas for Individuals

What can one person accomplish? Choose an individual fundraiser and find out exactly what you can do to change the world.

Individual Fundraising

At some point, you may wish to take on raising funds for a cause as an individual, rather than as part of any existing organization.

There may be many reasons for such a decision. Perhaps there is no local branch of such an organization in your area; perhaps it is a relatively obscure cause; perhaps you wish to insure that your entire donation goes to the cause, rather than having a portion of it go to the administrative upkeep of an organization; or perhaps you simply want to make your contributions in your own name rather than as part of a group.

How to Get Started

When raising funds on your own, you must be very open and above-board, taking measures that will insure that contributors know that the funds are actually going to the cause. Transparency is very important when you are raising money without the backing of an organization.

Individual Fundraising Ideas

There are many ways in which you can raise money on your own for a good cause:

Selling items is one of the simplest and easiest ways to do raise money. In order to succeed at this without being a part of a group, you will need things that are unique.

If you are creative and crafty, you will be able to create special items to sell. You can either sell them directly to other individuals or arrange to place the items in consignment shops or sell or auction them online.

Decide if you wish to sell many items of a similar kind, or to sell one-of-a-kind pieces that will command a higher price. For example, you could make dozens of quickly-made items such as knitted or crocheted potholders or bookmarks or dishcloths and hope to sell a number of them. Alternatively, you could make a one-of-a-kind item such as a quilt or art doll or painting; such an item could be auctioned off or simply sold at a much higher price.

If you don’t have the skills to make an item you can sell, you could consider offering your services for donations instead. Nearly anything you know how to do will find someone who needs it done and who lacks either the skill or the time to do it for him or her self.

Some ideas for services you could offer:

  • Lawn care
  • Babysitting
  • Elder care
  • Dog-walking
  • Running errands
  • Cleaning houses
  • Car detailing

These are only a few of the things that people may wish to pay for someone else to do and will be more willing to pay for it they know the funds are going to a good cause.

Direct Donations

You could also solicit direct contributions as an individual. In order to do this you will need to be able to explain your cause to those you approach, and to be prepared to answer any questions that are posed as to how the funds will be used.

One simple way to solicit funds for your favorite cause is to put a donation button on your own website; you can arrange for the funds to go directly to your cause, which will make the work of raising the money even easier.
